Project VUKA Backstory

| September 13, 2017

Some time ago it came to the attention of Better Life that children from the Ikhwezilesizwe Primary School in Khayelitsha were excelling at hockey, some even making it onto the provincial teams and obtaining bursaries to attend Wynburg Boys High School in Cape Town .

This success has been achieved due to a passionate and dedicated head mistress and an inspiring coach, and in spite of the bad condition of the sporting facilities at the school.   The players are practicing on an old cement tennis court with chairs acting as goal posts.

The project is gaining momentum , as are the Boys U14 Team of IKHWEZILESIZWE PRIMARY SCHOOL who have just won the Western Province U14’s ! Congratulations .

Some photos of their matches against De Hoop in Somerset West and Wallacedene . They have to play all their matches away from home due to no pitch at present but we are planning to change that ……. More to follow…….

Better Life has, therefore, resolved to undertake a Project which will upgrade the sports field at Ikhwezilesize Primary School.   This will involve the laying of a half astro turf playing field which can be used for many different sports, but primarily for hockey.

In addition to this, the second phase of the Project will aim to upgrade the playing field at the Khayalitsha Sports Club with astro turf, reaching the wider community and enriching the lives of all the residents of Khayalitsha.

The Project will span a few years and will involve major fundraising.
